steve mason aka duck hairback aka king biscuit time aka black affair…
steve mason has taken on many guises…  he has described his current (black affair) variously as ‘gothic pop’ and ‘sex-rock’, neither of which really do justice to this radical new direction for the ex beta band frontman.
electro pop? disco noir? cheesy handbag strip hop anyone?
as usual, mason’s music defies categorization.  look beyond the high sheen ultra modern surface (‘modern’ in the same way that back to the future, miami vice, or that tit max headroom seemed modern at the time… the time being the ’80s) and there’s a dark, eerie undercurrent, reminiscent of say, depeche mode at their most strung out.
you know what they say…  if you can remember the ’80s, you were there.

tears for fears… ‘pale shelter’

it turns out tears for fears weren’t always shit.  i heard king creosote covering this song on the radio recently so had to check out the original. this is from their 1983 debut album ‘the hurting’.

tears for fears… ‘head over heels’

as i said, they weren’t always shit.  maybe they weren’t ever shit, but i always associated them with everybody wants to rule (or run) the world, shout, not turning up at live aid, men with ponytails and comedy teeth.  what do you mean those were their real teeth? getoutahere!

this is from their fourth studio album ‘songs from the big chair’, being used to great effect in the film donnie darko.  apparently, this scene was written and choreographed specifically with this song in mind.
